Super Calculator Salary: Understanding Your Pay Against the National Minimum Wage
The national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week) from July 2026, with super guarantee of 12% paid on top by employers.
Super Calculator Salary: Know Your Pay Floor
When you use a super calculator salary tool, the first number you need is your ordinary-time earnings. That base figure determines both your take-home pay and the super your employer must add. This guide explains how the national minimum wage, award rates, and average earnings relate to your salary, and how super fits on top.
The National Minimum Wage Floor
From 1 July 2026, the adult national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for a 38-hour ordinary week. This is the legal minimum for award-free and agreement-free employees in the national system. Your employer must pay this amount before adding super. The super guarantee is 12% on top of your ordinary time earnings, so your total employment cost is at least $29.61 per hour ($26.44 × 1.12).
Not everyone receives the full adult rate. Award-free juniors have percentage-based minimums: for example, a 17-year-old earns $15.29 per hour ($19.11 casual). Apprentices and trainees follow the Miscellaneous Award rates. Always check your classification.
Award Rates vs. the National Minimum
Most employees are covered by a modern award, which sets a higher minimum than the national floor. From the first full pay period after 1 July 2026, award rates rise by 4.75%, but the lowest ongoing classification cannot fall below $26.44/h. Introductory rates (first six months) are capped at $25.74/h. If your award specifies a higher rate, that is your minimum. Use the Rate tables to find your award classification.
Average Earnings: A Benchmark
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports full-time adult ordinary-time earnings at $2,083.70 per week (May 2026). All employees average total earnings are $1,579.20 per week. These are survey averages, not legal minimums. A super calculator salary tool often asks for your annual salary; comparing it to these averages can help you see where you sit in the market.
Negotiated Salaries and Enterprise Agreements
If you have an enterprise agreement or individual contract, your salary may be above the award or minimum. However, it cannot undercut the legal floor. When using a super calculator, input your agreed base salary (excluding super) to estimate future super balances. Remember, super is an employer cost on top, not part of your take-home pay.
Tax and Medicare on Your Weekly Packet
Your weekly pay after tax depends on your tax bracket. For the 2026-27 tax year, resident rates with the full tax-free threshold apply. Medicare levy is estimated at 2% once annualised ordinary gross reaches $30,000. This model excludes the low income tax offset, HELP repayments, salary sacrifice, and the Medicare levy surcharge. For a precise take-home figure, use the ATO's tax calculator. This site does not provide tax advice.
Casual Loading and Weekly Figures
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on the minimum wage, making the casual national minimum $33.05 per hour. The weekly casual figure on this site is the published casual hourly rate times 38 ordinary hours, with no penalty rates. The adult weekly national minimum is the published $1,004.90 figure; multiplying $26.44 by 38 lands 18 cents lower because of rounding in the order.
History of the National Minimum Wage
The Fair Work Commission sets the national minimum wage each year. Recent rates: 1 July 2023 $23.23/h ($882.80/week); 1 July 2024 $24.10/h ($915.90/week); 1 July 2025 $24.95/h ($948.00/week); 1 July 2026 $26.44/h ($1,004.90/week). These increases reflect the Commission's annual review.
State System Employees
These national rates apply to national-system employees who are award-free and agreement-free. Most private-sector employees are in the national system. Some state public sector and local government employees, and some Western Australian sole traders and partnerships in the state system, are covered by state awards instead. A modern award or enterprise agreement can require a higher rate than the national minimum.
How to Use a Super Calculator Salary Tool
A typical super calculator asks for your current salary and contribution rate. Always use your base salary (before super). The calculator then projects your super balance assuming the 12% guarantee and investment returns. Remember that your actual super may vary with fund performance and fees. For award-covered employees, ensure your salary meets the minimum award rate before adding super.

Questions people ask next
How does the super guarantee affect my total salary package?
The super guarantee is an employer contribution of 12% on top of your ordinary time earnings. It is not deducted from your pay but added to your super fund. When using a super calculator salary tool, ensure you input your base salary before super to get accurate projections.
What is the difference between the national minimum wage and a modern award rate?
The national minimum wage is the legal floor for award-free employees. Modern award rates are higher minimums for specific industries and occupations. Your award or enterprise agreement may set a higher rate than the national minimum. Always check your award classification.
Can my pay be lower than the national minimum wage?
Some employees can be paid less: juniors, apprentices, trainees, and those on introductory award rates. For award-free juniors, percentages apply (e.g., under 16: $9.73/h). Apprentice rates follow the Miscellaneous Award. Supported wages for disability also exist. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains these exceptions.
