Seek Salary Finder vs Australia's Minimum Wage: What You Need to Know
From 1 July 2026, the national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for adult award-free employees, but most workers are covered by a modern award that may set a higher rate.
Seek Salary Finder and the Australian Pay Floor
If you have used the Seek Salary Finder to research what a job might pay, you have seen advertised salaries that can vary widely by industry and location. That tool is excellent for understanding the market, but it does not tell you the legal minimum you must be paid. This guide separates the legal pay floor from survey averages, award rates, and negotiated salaries.
The Legal Minimum: National Minimum Wage
The Fair Work Commission sets the national minimum wage each year. From 1 July 2026, the rate is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for an adult employee not covered by an award or agreement. This is the absolute floor for award-free employees in the national system. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains and enforces these rules.
If you are a casual employee, you receive a 25% loading on top of the minimum, making the casual rate $33.05 per hour. This loading compensates for the lack of paid leave.
Award Rates Are Usually Higher
Most Australian employees are covered by a modern award that applies to their industry or occupation. Awards set minimum pay rates that are often higher than the national minimum. From 1 July 2026, award minimum wages increased by 4.75%, but the lowest ongoing classification cannot fall below the national minimum ($26.44/h). Introductory rates for the first six months cannot fall below $25.74/h or $978.10/week.
To find your award rate, use the Fair Work Ombudsman's Pay and Conditions Tool. Your award may also include penalty rates for weekends, public holidays, or late shifts, which push your pay higher again.
When Lower Rates Apply
Not every worker receives $26.44 an hour. Junior employees (under 21), apprentices, trainees, and some employees with disability have special rates. For award-free juniors, the percentages of the adult rate range from 36.8% (under 16) to 97.7% (age 20). Apprentice and trainee rates for award-free employees follow the Miscellaneous Award, not the junior percentages.
Enterprise Agreements and Negotiated Salaries
If your workplace has an enterprise agreement, that document sets the minimum pay and conditions. The base rate in the agreement cannot be less than the base rate in the relevant award. Above that, you can negotiate a higher salary. The Seek Salary Finder shows what employers are actually offering, which is often above the award.
Superannuation Is Extra
All minimum wage figures are gross pay before tax. Your employer must also pay superannuation guarantee contributions of 12% on top of your ordinary time earnings. From 1 July 2026, this must be paid at the same time as your wages (payday super).
How the Figures Compare
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported in May 2026 that full-time adult average ordinary-time earnings were $2,083.70 per week. That is more than double the national minimum. The Seek Salary Finder median for many professional roles will sit somewhere between the award rate and the ABS average. Remember: the minimum is a floor, not a benchmark.

Summary
The Seek Salary Finder is a helpful tool for market research, but it does not replace the legal minimums set by the Fair Work Commission. Always check your award or agreement first. The national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour from 1 July 2026, but most workers are entitled to more. Superannuation is paid on top.

Questions people ask next
What is the Seek Salary Finder?
The Seek Salary Finder is a free online tool on the Seek website that lets you search advertised salaries by job title and location. It shows a range and median based on real job ads, not the legal minimum. It is useful for market research but does not replace the minimum pay rates set by the Fair Work Commission or a modern award.
How does the national minimum wage compare to advertised salaries on Seek?
Advertised salaries on the Seek Salary Finder are typically higher than the national minimum wage because they reflect market rates for experienced workers. For example, the ABS reports average full-time adult ordinary-time earnings of $2,083.70 per week (May 2026), while the national minimum is $1,004.90 per week. The legal minimum is a floor, not a target.
Do I get superannuation on top of the minimum wage?
Yes. The superannuation guarantee requires your employer to pay an additional 12% of your ordinary time earnings into a super fund. This is on top of your gross wage. From 1 July 2026, employers must pay super at the same time as wages (payday super). The minimum wage figures quoted are before tax and before super.
