Salary Sacrifice Superannuation Calculator: How It Affects Your Minimum Wage and Take-Home Pay

The national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week (from 1 July 2026), but salary sacrifice arrangements can reduce your taxable income and affect your net pay.

What is a salary sacrifice superannuation calculator?

A salary sacrifice superannuation calculator helps you estimate how much take-home pay you lose when you agree to put part of your pre-tax salary into your super fund. It is a planning tool, not a legal requirement. The calculator compares your gross pay with your net pay after the sacrifice, and it shows the super contribution your employer makes on top. This site does not host a calculator, but we explain how the figures relate to the minimum wage and award rates.

How salary sacrifice interacts with the national minimum wage

The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for an adult employee. This is the floor before any salary sacrifice. Your employer must pay you at least this amount in cash, or a combination of cash and salary sacrifice, as long as the cash component is not less than the minimum wage. For example, if you earn $30.00 per hour and sacrifice $3.00 into super, your cash pay is $27.00, which is above the minimum. But if you earn exactly $26.44 and sacrifice any amount, your cash pay would fall below the minimum, which is not allowed. The Fair Work Ombudsman enforces this rule.

Award rates and salary sacrifice

Modern awards set higher minimum rates for many industries. If you are covered by an award, your base rate of pay (before any sacrifice) must be at least the award rate. The award backstop from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour for ongoing employees, but many awards have higher classifications. Salary sacrifice cannot reduce your cash pay below the award minimum. For example, if your award rate is $28.00 per hour, you can sacrifice up to the difference between $28.00 and $26.44, but no more, because your cash pay must stay at or above $26.44. Check your award on the Fair Work Ombudsman website.

Casual loading and salary sacrifice

Casual employees receive a loading of 25% on top of the minimum wage, making the casual minimum $33.05 per hour from 1 July 2026. The loading is part of your ordinary rate, so salary sacrifice is calculated on the loaded rate. If you are a casual earning $33.05 and sacrifice $3.00, your cash pay is $30.05, still above the adult minimum. Junior casuals have lower rates based on age percentages (see the reference). The same rule applies: cash pay after sacrifice cannot fall below the relevant junior minimum.

Using the calculator with junior rates

If you are under 21 and award-free, your minimum wage is a percentage of the adult rate. For example, a 17-year-old earns $15.29 per hour (57.8% of $26.44). A salary sacrifice calculator must use your actual rate, not the adult rate. Sacrificing any amount from a junior rate could quickly drop cash pay below the legal floor. The reference shows junior percentages from 36.8% for under 16 to 97.7% for 20-year-olds. Always check your age-based minimum before agreeing to a sacrifice.

Super guarantee on top

Employers must pay super guarantee of 12% (from 1 July 2026) on your ordinary time earnings. This is on top of your gross pay, including any salary sacrifice amount. For example, if you earn $1,000 per week and sacrifice $100 into super, your employer still pays $120 (12% of $1,000) into your super fund. The ATO requires this. The salary sacrifice calculator should show that your total super contribution (employer plus your sacrifice) is higher, but your take-home cash is lower.

Comparing with survey averages

The ABS May 2026 survey reports full-time adult ordinary-time earnings of $2,083.70 per week and all employees average total earnings of $1,579.20 per week. These are much higher than the minimum wage. Salary sacrifice is more common among higher earners who want to boost super. The calculator helps you see the trade-off between current cash and future super.

Important notes

This guide is for orientation only. It is not a pay determination, tax advice, or legal advice. The Fair Work Commission sets the national minimum wage. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains and enforces it. A modern award or enterprise agreement can require a higher rate than the national minimum. Apprentice and trainee rates for award-free employees follow the Miscellaneous Award, not the junior percentages. Always use a salary sacrifice calculator with your actual pay and check with your employer or a tax professional.

For the published floors, see the rate tables and how the figures work.

Questions people ask next

Does salary sacrifice affect my minimum wage entitlement?

No, the minimum wage is the base rate before any salary sacrifice. Your employer must still pay at least the minimum wage in cash or salary sacrifice components, but salary sacrifice cannot reduce your cash pay below the minimum wage. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains that salary sacrifice is a voluntary arrangement that does not change the legal minimum you must receive.

Can I salary sacrifice super if I'm on an award?

Yes, but the award minimum rate must still be paid in cash or as a combination of cash and salary sacrifice, provided the cash component is not less than the minimum wage. Check your award for any specific rules. The Fair Work Commission sets the award rates, and a modern award or enterprise agreement can require a higher rate than the national minimum.

How does the super guarantee apply with salary sacrifice?

The super guarantee (12% from 1 July 2026) is calculated on your ordinary time earnings, which includes salary sacrifice amounts. So salary sacrifice into super does not reduce the employer's super obligation. The ATO requires super to be paid on the full ordinary time earnings, including the sacrificed portion.
