Salary Sacrifice Car Australia: How It Affects Your Minimum Wage and Take-Home Pay
The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week, but salary sacrifice arrangements are voluntary and must not reduce the base rate below this floor.
Salary Sacrifice Car Australia: What It Means for Your Pay
Salary sacrifice for a car (often through a novated lease) is a popular way to reduce your taxable income by having your employer pay for a car from your pre-tax salary. In Australia, this arrangement is voluntary and negotiated between you and your employer. It does not change the legal minimum wage that applies to you, but it can affect your take-home pay, super, and tax obligations.
The Legal Minimum Wage Still Applies
The Fair Work Commission sets the national minimum wage. From 1 July 2026, the adult national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week for a 38-hour week. Casual employees receive $33.05 per hour (including the 25% casual loading). These figures are before tax and before any salary sacrifice arrangement.
If you are covered by a modern award, the award rate may be higher. The lowest ongoing classification in a modern award cannot fall below the national minimum. Introductory rates (first six months) are $25.74 per hour or $978.10 per week. Junior, apprentice, trainee, and supported wage rates can be lower – see the Rate tables for details.
Your salary sacrifice agreement must not reduce your base rate of pay below the applicable minimum. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains that the base rate is the minimum you must receive in cash or as a non-cash benefit (like a car). So even if you sacrifice part of your salary, the total value of your remuneration must meet the legal floor.
Separating the Legal Minimum from Other Pay Concepts
- Legal minimum: The national minimum wage or the award rate, whichever is higher. This is the floor.
- Survey average: The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported in May 2026 that full-time adult ordinary-time earnings averaged $2,083.70 per week. All employees (including part-time and casual) averaged $1,579.20 per week. These are market averages, not legal requirements.
- Award rate: A modern award can set a higher minimum for your industry or role. Check Which minimum wage applies to see if you are covered.
- Negotiated salary: Your actual salary may be above the minimum, and salary sacrifice can be part of that negotiation. The sacrificed amount is agreed between you and your employer.
Super Guarantee on Top
Your employer must pay super guarantee of 12% on your ordinary time earnings, on top of your salary. This applies regardless of salary sacrifice. However, if you sacrifice salary for a car, the super guarantee base may be affected. The ATO treats salary sacrifice for a car as a fringe benefit in some cases, which may reduce the amount counted as ordinary time earnings. Always check with your employer or the ATO to ensure your super is calculated correctly.
Tax and Medicare
In the 2026–27 tax year, resident rates with the full tax-free threshold apply. Medicare is estimated at 2% once your annualised ordinary gross income reaches $30,000. Salary sacrifice reduces your taxable income, which can lower your tax and Medicare levy. However, the low income tax offset, HELP repayments, and the Medicare levy surcharge are not modelled here. For personalised advice, consult a tax professional.
Award-Free Juniors and Other Rates
If you are award-free and under 21, the junior percentage rates apply. For example, a 19-year-old earns $21.82 per hour (82.5% of the adult rate). Salary sacrifice can still be arranged, but the base rate must be at least the junior minimum. See the Guides for more on junior and apprentice rates.
Important Notes
This guide is for orientation only. It is not a pay determination, tax advice, or legal advice. The national minimum wage figures are from the Fair Work Commission. The Fair Work Ombudsman enforces the law. If you have a specific salary sacrifice arrangement, seek advice from your employer, a tax agent, or the ATO.

Questions people ask next
Can salary sacrifice reduce my pay below the minimum wage?
No. The Fair Work Ombudsman states that salary sacrifice cannot reduce your base rate of pay below the minimum wage or the applicable award rate. The total value of your remuneration (cash plus the car benefit) must be at least the legal minimum. For award-free adults from 1 July 2026, that is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week.
How does salary sacrifice for a car affect my super guarantee?
The super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings. Salary sacrifice may reduce your cash salary, but the employer must still pay super on your ordinary time earnings as defined by the ATO. If the car is provided as a fringe benefit, the sacrificed amount may not be ordinary time earnings. Check with your employer or the ATO for your specific arrangement.
Is salary sacrifice for a car available to all employees?
No, it is a voluntary arrangement between you and your employer. Not all employers offer salary sacrifice schemes. If offered, you must agree in writing. Your employer cannot force you to salary sacrifice a car as a condition of employment.
