Minimum Wage Australia 2025: The Weekly Packet After Tax, Medicare and Super
The national minimum wage in Australia for 2025 is $24.95 per hour or $948 per week for a full-time adult employee, before tax and super.
Minimum wage Australia 2025: what you need to know
The national minimum wage for 2025 is set by the Fair Work Commission and applies from 1 July 2025. For a full-time adult employee (38 ordinary hours per week), the rate is $24.95 per hour or $948 per week. This is the legal floor for award-free and agreement-free employees in the national system. If you are covered by a modern award or an enterprise agreement, that document may require a higher rate.
Separating the legal minimum from other figures
The $24.95 figure is the legal minimum set by the Fair Work Commission. It is not the same as:
- The average full-time adult ordinary-time earnings reported by the ABS, which in May 2025 was $2,083.70 per week.
- The all-employees average total earnings of $1,579.20 per week.
- A market rate negotiated between you and your employer, which can be higher.
What about juniors, apprentices and trainees?
Not every employee must receive $24.95 per hour. Award-free junior employees (under 21) have percentage-based minimums. For example, a 16-year-old receives 47.3% of the adult rate, or $12.51 per hour (casual $15.64). Apprentices and trainees who are award-free follow the Miscellaneous Award rates, not the junior percentages. Supported wages for employees with disability may also be lower.
Superannuation is on top
Employers must pay the super guarantee of 12% on ordinary time earnings. For a full-time adult on $948 per week, that means an extra $113.76 per week into your super fund. This is not deducted from your take-home pay.
Tax and Medicare on your weekly packet
Using the 2025-26 tax rates (with full tax-free threshold), a single adult earning $948 per week would have about $148 withheld in tax and $19 in Medicare levy (once annualised income exceeds $30,000). This leaves a net weekly pay of around $781. These figures are estimates and do not include the low income tax offset, HELP repayments, salary sacrifice, or the Medicare levy surcharge.
How the 2025 rate compares with previous years
The national minimum wage has increased over recent years:
- 1 July 2023: $23.23 per hour ($882.80 per week)
- 1 July 2024: $24.10 per hour ($915.90 per week)
- 1 July 2025: $24.95 per hour ($948.00 per week)
- From 1 July 2026 it will rise to $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week).
Which minimum wage applies to you?
Most private-sector employees in Australia are in the national system and covered by the national minimum wage if no award or agreement applies. Some state public sector and local government employees, and some Western Australian sole traders and partnerships, are in the state system and may be covered by state awards. Important notes
This information is for orientation only. It is not a pay determination, tax advice, or legal advice. The adult weekly national minimum is the published $948.00 figure. Multiplying $24.95 by 38 gives $948.10 due to rounding; the official weekly rate is $948.00. Casual weekly figures on this site are the published casual hourly rate ($31.19) times 38 ordinary hours, with no penalty rates.

Questions people ask next
What is the minimum wage in Australia for 2025?
From 1 July 2025, the national minimum wage is $24.95 per hour or $948 per week for a full-time adult employee (38 hours). This is the legal floor for award-free and agreement-free employees in the national system. Juniors, apprentices, trainees, and supported employees may receive lower rates.
How does the 2025 minimum wage compare to award rates?
Modern award minimum wages also increased by 4.75% from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2025. However, the lowest ongoing classification in an award cannot fall below the national minimum wage of $24.95 per hour. An introductory rate (first 6 months) is capped at $24.74 per hour. If your award rate is higher, that higher rate applies.
Does superannuation apply on top of the minimum wage?
Yes. Employers must pay the super guarantee of 12% on top of ordinary time earnings. So for a full-time adult employee earning $948 per week, the employer contributes an additional $113.76 per week to super. This is not deducted from the employee's pay.
