Behaviour support practitioner salary: award minimums and how your rate compares
The legal minimum for a full-time behaviour support practitioner on weekdays is $40.49 an hour under the SCHADS Award Level 3, with super of 12% on top.
How the behaviour support practitioner salary floor
Behaviour support practitioners in Australia are classified under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award (SCHADS Award). The Fair Work Commission sets the minimum rates in this award, and the Fair Work Ombudsman explains and enforces them. For a full-time employee at Level 3, the minimum weekday hourly rate from 1 July 2026 is $40.49. More experienced practitioners at Level 4 or 5 earn up to $55.85 an hour under the award. These rates are national and do not vary by state.
How the award minimum compares to the national minimum wage
The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 an hour for an adult employee not covered by an award. Because behaviour support practitioners are covered by the SCHADS Award, their legal minimum is much higher. The award backstop means no classification can fall below the national minimum, but Level 3 already sits well above it. If you are award-free and doing similar work, the national minimum would apply, but that is uncommon for this occupation.
What about super and other payments?
Superannuation is paid on top of the hourly rate. The super guarantee is 12% of ordinary time earnings from 1 July 2026. So on a $40.49 hourly rate, your employer pays an extra $4.86 into your super account. This is not part of your take-home pay but is a compulsory additional cost for the employer.
Enterprise agreements and above-award rates
Many providers pay above the award minimum, especially for experienced or senior practitioners. Enterprise agreements can set higher rates, allowances, or penalty structures. Always check your employment contract or agreement to see if you are paid above the award floor. The award is the minimum, not the maximum.
How to check your own rate
If you have an hourly rate, compare it to the SCHADS Award pay guide for your classification level. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides a pay rate calculator. You can also refer to rate tables on this site for a summary of award minimums. For more on how the figures work, see how the figures work.
Independent contractors and NDIS caps
If you work as an independent contractor with an ABN, you set your own rate. However, for plan-managed NDIS clients, the NDIS price limit for standard weekday self-care support is $73.58 an hour (2026-27). This is a service price cap, not a worker wage. Independent workers also cover their own insurance, tax, and super, so the headline rate is not comparable with an employee wage.
Frequently asked questions about behaviour support practitioner salary
Is the behaviour support practitioner salary set by the national minimum wage?
No. Behaviour support practitioners are covered by the SCHADS Award. The award minimum for a Level 3 employee is $40.49 an hour on weekdays, well above the national minimum of $26.44. The national minimum only applies if you are award-free, which is rare for this role.
Do casual behaviour support practitioners get paid more than the award minimum?
Yes. Casual employees receive a 25% loading on the ordinary hourly rate, so the weekday casual minimum is about $50.61 an hour. Weekend and public holiday rates are higher again: Saturday 1.5x, Sunday 1.75x, public holiday 2.25x the ordinary rate.
Can my employer pay me less than the SCHADS Award rates?
No. The award rates are legal minimums. Your employer must pay at least the rate for your classification level. Enterprise agreements can set higher rates but cannot go below the award. If you are an independent contractor, you set your own rates, but the NDIS price cap of $73.58 an hour for standard weekday self-care support limits what can be billed.
