ATO Salary Sacrifice Calculator: Award Coverage vs Award-Free Rates
The national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour from 1 July 2026, but salary sacrifice does not reduce this gross floor; the ATO salary sacrifice calculator helps estimate net pay after packaging.
ATO Salary Sacrifice Calculator and the Minimum Wage Floor
The ATO salary sacrifice calculator is a tool from the Australian Taxation Office that helps employees estimate how salary packaging affects their take-home pay. It is not a pay calculator for minimum wage compliance. This guide explains how salary sacrifice interacts with Australia’s pay floors, award coverage, and award-free rates.
The Legal Minimum: National Minimum Wage
From 1 July 2026, the national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour for adult award-free employees. The Fair Work Commission sets this rate. The Fair Work Ombudsman enforces it. This is the absolute floor for national-system employees who are not covered by a modern award or enterprise agreement. Salary sacrifice does not reduce this gross figure; the ATO salary sacrifice calculator shows the net effect on tax, but the gross must stay at or above $26.44 per hour (or the applicable award rate).
Award Coverage vs Award-Free Rates
If you are covered by a modern award, the award rate for your classification may be higher than the national minimum. For ongoing adult employees, the award backstop is $26.44 per hour or $1,004.90 per week from 1 July 2026. Introductory rates for the first six months is $25.74 per hour or $978.10 per week. Award rates are set by the Commission. The ATO salary sacrifice calculator does not set these rates. If you are award-free, the national minimum applies unless a state award covers you (some public sector employees are in the state system, but most private sector is national).
Super Guarantee on Top
All ordinary-time earnings are subject to the super guarantee at 12% from 1 July 2026. This is an employer payment on top of your gross pay, not part of the minimum wage. The ATO salary sacrifice calculator can include salary sacrifice contributions to super, but the employer must still pay 12% on your full ordinary-time earnings before sacrifice.
Survey Averages and Negotiated Salaries
The ABS May 2026 survey reports full-time adult ordinary-time earnings at $2,083.70 per week. All employees average total earnings $1,579.20 per week. These are not legal floors. The ATO salary sacrifice calculator is not a survey figure. It is a tax tool.
Using the ATO Salary Sacrifice Calculator
Use the calculator to estimate tax savings from packaging items like cars, laptops, or super. It does not change your gross minimum. The calculator uses ATO tax rates and the low-income tax offset and Medicare levy. It leaves out HELP, Medicare levy surcharge, and the tax-free threshold. It is not a pay determination.

Questions people ask next
Does salary sacrifice reduce my minimum wage entitlement?
No. Salary sacrifice reduces your taxable income but not your gross ordinary-time earnings for minimum wage purposes. The Fair Work Act requires that your base rate of pay (before salary sacrifice) must not fall below the relevant minimum wage or award rate. The ATO salary sacrifice calculator shows the after-tax effect, but the legal floor is set by the gross figure.
How does the super guarantee apply to salary sacrificed amounts?
The super guarantee (12% from 1 July 2026) is calculated on your ordinary-time earnings before salary sacrifice. Even if you salary sacrifice part of your pay into super, your employer must still pay the 12% on your full gross ordinary-time earnings. The ATO salary sacrifice calculator can help you model the total super contributions, but the minimum super obligation is set by law.
Can salary sacrifice be used to meet award rates?
No. Award rates are minimum gross pay rates that must be paid in money (cash or equivalent). Salary sacrifice arrangements cannot reduce the cash component below the award rate. The ATO salary sacrifice calculator is useful for tax planning, but it does not change the obligation to pay at least the award rate in dollar terms before any packaging.
